Sea lettuce, called both sea lettuce and sea lettuce, is harvested in salt water and dried using solar energy, which gives the product a so-called Co2 negative status, which contributes positively to the overall Co2 account.

Dried sea lettuce has a more intense flavor than the fresh seaweed. The consistency is very porous and when you chew on it, it swells up again and you get almost the same consistency as the fresh one.

A soaking of this type of tongs before use is recommended at all times, to remove the unwanted marks that can occur in this type of tongs, as it has a very complex shape.

Seaweed is a sustainable resource that is harvested above the growth zone so that it can quickly re-sprout afterwards. In this way, the seaweed both contributes to removing nitrogen from the sea, while at the same time creating a nutritious food for your everyday life.

Serving suggestion:

  • You can use sea lettuce as an ingredient in a salad, a risotto or a soup
  • Sea salt can be substituted for parsley or other herbs when dried and granulated
  • Sea lettuce is the type of seaweed that changes the least during drying. When soaked, it becomes almost as fresh and whole leaves can be eaten, just like regular salad

Are you vegan or vegetarian?

Is seaweed right for you! Did you realize that seaweed and algae are the world's most sustainable source of food? Likewise, the advantages of seaweed are that it is a fantastic source of vitamins, minerals, proteins etc.

Seaweed is an algae that can be harvested all year round, which is very atypical compared to what we know from crops on land, and for the same reason, the nutrients in the seaweed vary enormously.

In some people's eyes, a vegetarian diet has a certain tendency to become a bit too boring and monotonous, and here seaweed can contribute with many cooking options and incredible umami flavors, which many often relate to meat.

The bit of fat that is in seaweed has a composition of essential omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, it also contains iron, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, as well as a high protein content.

In other words, seaweed is a good source of many of the things you, as a vegetarian or vegan, are at risk of lacking.

Likewise, there are people who become vegetarian, due to the environmental impact animals create, and here seaweed is unusually strong. Seaweed simply utilizes the nutrients that are already in the aquatic environment. It is hand harvested and dried with energy from solar cells. Thereby we achieve the lowest possible burden on the environment.

Seaweed has an amazing effect on absorbing nutrients. The difference is that the seaweed does not need roots for it, just like we see with plants on land. This is because the seaweed's cells are in direct contact with the water. For many years, the discharge of too many nutrients in marine areas has been a political issue, and here seaweed plays an important role. The seaweed's ability to bind nutrients temporarily helps the problem, but when it dies, the nutrients return to the aquatic environment, or bind to the seabed. If, on the other hand, we remove/harvest some of this seaweed, we help to reduce the nutrient content in the sea.

Dansk Tang works purposefully with the UN's global goals

No. 7 - Sustainable energy
Alternative energy sources are a "must have" for Danish seaweed, throughout the summer all seaweed drying takes place in large greenhouses, where the sun heats the seaweed and thereby dries the seaweed. In the cold months, all electricity comes from sustainable energy sources, such as solar collectors.

No 8 - Decent jobs and economic growth
Dansk Tang is a Danish entrepreneurial story, about a sustainable niche business in growth within seaweed, as food, and therefore they are also a CSR company, (Corporate Social Responsibility) which since their inception has contributed and employed employees, who on one or other way would have to return to the labor market. We feel it as a natural thing to have young people employed. We work purposefully to integrate social and environmental considerations into the business, it is simply part of Dansk Tang's DNA.

No 11 - Sustainable cities and communities
Dansk Tang makes an active commitment to protect and preserve the world's culture and natural heritage, which to that extent provides meaningful work. Odsherred is Denmark's first UNESCO Global Geopark, and they are naturally proud to be located in this particular area. The geography and the unique Ice Age landscapes are the reason why Odsherred is so rich in seaweed, and of many different species. At the moment, Dansk Tang can offer 20 different ones. All species are hand-harvested sustainably and the wild and maritime thus remain intact with nature.

No. 12 - Ensure sustainable consumption and forms of production
Dansk Tang they work locally and almost without transport, as the production facilities are close by. The production is also optimized and the majority of the electricity comes from solar cells. Here it is also important to mention that the seaweed included in the products has a CO2 load of around zero! Dansk Tang uses recycled cardboard boxes that they get from their neighbors in Anneberg Kulturpark and the shipments of filling material naturally consist of dried eel grass that has washed up on the beaches. The consumer can then use this as compost in his garden. Dried eel grass is perfect for compost, as it is also moisture neutral.
The boxes in which they deliver seaweed to restaurants and canteens have a name on them, as the same box is used again and again. A simple bar system tells about the number of times. A bag is used to wrap the tang. The record for recycled boxes stands at a whopping 98 times!

No. 13 - Act fast to combat climate change and its consequences
Dansk Tang is very conscious about the whole process in their production and that they contributed to doing something before it is too late! The seaweed they harvest is an excellent example of a way to do something quickly and efficiently, the seaweed is either sold wet or dry, and as a consumer you have the opportunity to buy a product without climate impact. You can read much more about seaweed's CO2 uptake here. The latest initiative is the establishment of a laboratory in the company where they grow tanglines. Liner which can then be put out into the water and clean it at the same time as it absorbs CO2.

No 14 - Conserve and ensure sustainable use of the world's oceans and their resources
In continuation of the other points, point No. 14 with a really nice story. One way to use the sea is precisely seaweed. Our harvesting takes place sustainably and with the environment in mind, we cut the seaweed so that it grows further. At Rørvig, we have a seaweed farm with sugar seaweed and finger seaweed, and applications for new seaweed farms are awaiting permission from the coastal directorate.
